Wk 15 – Art Experience- Finger Painting

This activity was actually super fun and I really enjoyed it.  I watched a Bob Ross episode on Netflix the other day which gave me the idea to watch it while I finger Painted.  Although I was not able to use all the different brushes he was using it was still super fun.  I ended up using my water colors so that I could use similar colors as him.  I actually had some of the same colors, but his were oil based.  It was difficult to keep up with him so I only made the background of the mountains and did not add the trees. I was surprised the way my painting came out because I was expecting it to come out super bad. I’m actually planning on painting again while watching a Bob Ross episode, but this time I am going to use paint brushes and not my fingers. 20161210_174659

Wk 15 – Artist Conversation-Patricia Martin

Artist: Patricia Martin

Exhibit: Holiday Sale

Media: Thread and natural dye

Gallery: Dennis W. Dutzi Gallery

Website: patriciamartinartist.com

About the artist:

Patricia Martin is currently a Master of Fine Arts student working with fiber with two years of school left.  She did her undergraduate degree in color reproduction.  She has always wanted to do this before she went to college. She already has her own business and is a private teacher.  She offers beginning weaving classes through her website.  She uses natural color in her work, but prefers whatever is the most efficient.

Formal Analysis:

I really liked how she used a tie dye style with earthy colors. It made sense after talking to her since most of the dyes she was using were natural dyes.  I went up to talk to Patricia because I heard her talking about how she uses natural dyes and I was interested in the process.  I really liked how all the stuff in the room went together even though they were all from different artist.

Content Analysis:

Patricia seemed very excited to be there presenting her work or she is a very jolly person.  I think it is great that she came back to school to get her master’s after she already has her own business selling her art. It shows how dedicated she is to her work and that she is always looking to improve. When she was talking about making her own dyes it made me think of the book gathering blue. It is supposed to be the sequel to the giver.  The girl in the novel job in her community to mend the embroidery on a cloak for the town’s annual ceremony and she has to dye all of the thread by hand.  The author briefly mentioned the process during the novel so it was really cool to hear how she dyed some of her material.

Wk 14 – Art Experience –Instagram Activity

For the art experience this week everyone in class posted at least 4 photos on Instagram and hash tagged them so they will form a collage like all hashtags do.  I personally am not a huge fan of posting multiple photos in one day it seems a bit excessive, but I did it for the sake of the class and experience.  I thought it was actually going to be a little difficult to find something to post so when I woke up in the morning I started looking through all of the pictures on my phone and found one that I took of the sand at Seal Beach years ago.  I did not think it was anything special I just like that I could see the ripples in the sand so I took it and never thought about it again, however when I was looking at my pictures Wednesday morning it made me feel really relaxed.  I woke up a few hours earlier than I was during the past week and a half.  It was surprising to me that I was not groggy and I felt good about waking up early which generally never happens for me.  The picture of the zooplankton was just what I am currently working on in lab and I was really excited to find a zoea which is the larval form of a crab.  I usually only get copepods because they are the most abundant type of zooplankton.  The picture of the dog was a service animal event on campus.  I was super excited about them being there I love animal and have issues with handling stress. I have even considered getting a service animal and I would have if it was not so expensive. The last photo I took of the stingray was a picture I took the last time I went to the aquarium.  I took at least 30 pictures trying to get the bottom side of the ray because their faces are so cute. The collage we formed as a class was pretty interesting to see what people post about their day.  It seemed pretty typical since we all had to post 4 photos that there was a good amount of animal photos because everyone loves their pets. I think it would have been pretty cool if the photos we posted had to fit a theme and maybe if we only had to post one or two photos, since there are so many they are not all in one screen. Overall this was a pretty interesting assignment and I felt like I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Wk 14 – Classmate Conversation- Tina Tran

This week I had my classmate conversation with Tina Tran. She is a 5th year biochemistry major and is currently in Dr. Pace’s lab.  His lab is very technology bases and studies larval development in animals. The question this week was about what we think college would be like in 2036.  We both agreed that we do not think college will be much different that it is today. We do think it will definitely be more technology based and there will possibly be more online classes.  I think it will also be twice as expensive since 20 years ago college was a lot cheaper and there was not the same technology that there is today.  So technology will also be a larger component in education than it is today.

Me and Tina! Special guest appearance by Lukas

Wk 13- Classmate Conversation-Andy Bui

This week I had my classmate conversation with Andy Bui.  He is a third year Molecular and Cellular Biology major.  He enjoys YouTube videos about technology, hanging out with friends and sushi.  His favorite ice cream is strawberry.  This week’s question was about the matrix if you would rather eat the blue pill or the red pill.  Andy and I both did not know much about the matrix so it took us some time to decide.  We both ended up choosing the red pill.  Since it is better to live in reality where what you do could make an impact and possibly help. While if you took the red pill nothing will be real it will all be a fantasy as reality flies by.20161116_143307

Wk 12- Artist Conversation – Sage Garver

Exhibition Information

Artist: Sage Garver

Exhibition: Bio

Media: Polyurethane Foam with white paint, plastic iridescent film and wire

Gallery: Dennis W. Dutzi Gallery

Website: N/A

Instagram: N/A

About the Artist

Sage Garver is a senior in the Sculpture BFA program from Hermosa Beach.  This exhibit is actually her senior show! After she graduates she wants to move to Hawaii to live with her sister and work on her art.  Sculpture started off as a hobby and once she started taken classes at El Camino College it became more serious.   Some of her hobbies include swimming, hiking and cooking. This was her first solo exhibition, but she has been a part of 2 other BFA sculpture exhibitions.  It took her about a month to get everything done. Her favorite part was designing the exhibit.  Installing the exhibit was the most difficult and took her 3 days of almost non-stop working. Luckily she had some help from some friends during the installation process.

Formal Analysis

The sculptures were popping out of the walls like they were put on with plaster.  Everything in the room was white except for the center piece which was a gold chain with a shiny piece in the middle. All of the sculptures on the wall being white really made me pay attention to the shape of each individual piece which almost made me forget about the center piece.  It was noticeable that some of the shapes were supposed to be cells and organs which was pretty cool.

Content Analysis

After talking to Sage I understood more of what she was trying to convey.  She mentioned how she has always had a lot of health problems that would put her in the hospital for days which prevented her from doing things that she wanted to do.  The center piece is supposed to be a unifying thing that brings everything together.  There is also a fork in the center piece that is supposed to represent the things you put in your body.  It seems like she was embracing and using the thing that she felt like was holding her back for so many years to her advantage.

Synthesis/My Experience

The exhibit was really cool.  I really wanted to touch all of the pieces of foam coming out of the wall, but with great restrain I refrained.  I really like that she choose to have all of the pieces be white especially since she does not have a science background. I feel like everything being in white shows how confusing the human body is to the general public. Even when a doctor explains it to you it may still be confusing unless you have that background in human physiology.

Wk 11- Artist Conversation -Kyle Kruse

Exhibit Information

Artist: Kyle Kruse

Exhibition: Janus Maxim

Media: Film, sculpture, wood, and sediment

Gallery: Marilyn Werby Gallery

Website: kylekruseart.com

Instagram: kyle.kruse

About the Artist

Kyle is in his last semester at CSULB in the Print Making BFA program.  This show was his senior project and took him 10 months to complete.  He was born from immigrants from Northern California and has never lived in the same place for more than a year except Long Beach.  He has lived in Long Beach for 6 years and plans to move when he finishes his undergraduate program.  He would either want to move to the U.K. and maybe get his BFA in visual anthropology or move to New York.

Formal Analysis

The room was completely dark with 3 screens each one continuously played its own video. On the opposite side of the room there were 3 drawings on the wall and in front of those drawings there were 3 sculptures. There was a mixed of fine sediment with some small rocks scattered throughout the gallery. The sediment made the floor a tad slippery if you were not careful and drag your feet.  The overall feel of the room was dark and creepy, but interesting.

Content Analysis

Kyle chose to use Greek mythology in his exhibition since most people in western civilization have at least some knowledge of the basic stories.  He sees his audience as everyone and wanted anyone who walked into the room to feel something about it even if it is just that it is creepy.  His last show focused on sensory sculpture and I could tell from the exhibit that he was going for the same feel.  I feel like he is using ideas that people are familiar with and using them to make some sort of connection.

Synthesis/My Experience

Like I mentioned before the room felt a bit creepy to me it reminded me a little of the show American horror story witches coven because that is the only one I have seen.  After talking with him a little I think I began to understand what he was trying to convey.  He mentioned Sisyphus and how he does the same task every day for eternity and I kind of saw that in the videos since it a continuous loop the people or person in the video is essentially completing the same task over and over again. He mentioned how wherever someone is in the world they general do not know what is going on in other parts of the world.  In my mind I was thinking well we have the internet so we could easily find news of what is going on elsewhere, but how many people actually utilized that.  I know that I definitely do not do that. I do not even watch the news for what is happening around me.  I know I should be aware of what is going on around me, but maybe that is what is wrong with society.  We should be aware what is happening in other places so that we could help if necessary.

Wk 11 – Classmate Conversation -Nih Troung

This week I had my classmate conversation with Nih Truong she is a 2nd year in the pre-nursing program. She currently lives and Westminster and commutes to school about 20 minutes each day.  She does not really have a backup plan if she does not make it into the nursing program, but that is fine she still has time to figure out what she wants to do if it does not work out.   We were talking about Demi Lovato’s reaction to the drawing done of her as a mermaid with an unrealistic body.  I actually have never seen the photo until after my conversation with Nih, but from how the question was posed we agreed that she may have over reacted a bit and she could have stated how she felt in a more polite way.  I understand that she has always tried to convey having a healthy body image to young girls because that is her main audience, but she should also try to show how important it is to deal conflicts in an appropriate way.  After I saw the drawings I see that she would be upset since she has had issues with anorexia, however, I still think she should have toned down her response.

Wk 10 Art Experience – Fiber Art Social Network

Social network from class, this is the portion where most of my yarn attached
Family Tree

I decided to make a family tree as my social network just because family is very important to me and I have a large family.  I did my best on including everyone, but it is quite difficult to include everyone on my Mom’s side since I may have only met them once and they live in Nicaragua. Her side of the family is also just a big, however, there are so many people I can’t remember all of their names and how I am related to them. Anyways the Green lines are supposed to be the first generation of people related, the second generation is connected by yellow, the third generation is connected by orange, the pink represents significant others.

I think of social network as both the friends you have in real life and the people you are “friends” with on online applications since they do overlap a bit.  However, most of the time I think about the online version because I am pretty sure that is what people are referring to now a days when they say social network.  Dunbar’s Number does not make sense to me because having 150 meaningful relationships seems like a lot of people especially when I already have a large family there is not much room left for more friends.  Of course there is also the fact that you may be closer to some people than to others even if they are not a part of your family.  When people have 1,000 or more Facebook friends that could mean a number of things they could be a very likable person who Facebook request everyone he meets, they could be involved with various different groups of friends or community groups, or that person may be famous.  When visualized our Art 110 Social Network nothing really surprised me since people know each other from other classes or activities, they planned to take this class together, or they met in class when doing the classmate conversations. I feel like I have close relationships with about maybe 15 people which personally it is a lot, but most of the people that I am close with are a part of my family.  I do not feel the need to have close relationships with a large number of people because they would not be the great. I would have rather have fewer more meaningful relationships.  I do have more friends on Facebook than I have in real life just because I have met a lot of people through school, jobs, and clubs. Most of those relationships are more like acquaintances not because I would not enjoy being really good friends with those people, but because we have different things going on and there is not enough time in the day to be good friends with everyone.  I do think it is beneficial to have acquaintances because of the opportunities you may find out about through them and I also learn a lot of new things from acquaintances on Facebook.

Wk 10 Artist Conversation- Tony Nguyen

Exhibition Information

Artist: Tony Nguyen

Exhibition: Neoteny

Media: Metal

Gallery: Dr. Maxine Merlino Gallery

Email: Robotictony@aol.com

Website: https://Eltigresite.wordpress.com/

Facebook: Facebook.com/RoboticTony

About the Artist

Tony is a 5th year getting his BFA in Metalsmith and this show was his senior thesis.  So not he is pretty much done with his undergraduate career! He seems very passionate about his work and is more than willing to talk with anyone about it.  After he graduates he would like to work in Hollywood making props and after that he would eventually like to become a professor.  The way he talked about his work made it easy to see that he is a kid at heart and it showed in his pieces.  He had the creativity of a child and was able to make his ideas into exquisite pieces.20161026_134425.jpg

7. Lepus Vambrace, 8. The Black Hand, 9. A Crown fit for a Monkey

Formal Analysis

The theme of the exhibit was Neoteny which is the retention of juvenile features in an adult animal. All of the pieces did represent something childish in a way; however, the maturity was needed to make each piece possible. Even though all of the work in the gallery was made of metal each piece was unique when it came to the color or how the metal was treated. For example the piece that was the green lanterns ring was treated with ammonium giving it the greenish color.  It’s incredible how he molded the metal to get the design he was looking for.

2. Sun Wukong, 3. Samuai Helmet, 4. Two Boomboxes and a Mixtape, 5.Willpower ring (green lantern ring), 6. Pillbug Wave

Content Analysis

As I was talking to Tony I could tell that he was passionate about his work and he knows how to work smart.  Almost all of the pieces in his show were from class assignments and he knew that he was having the show come up so he made all of the pieces go with his theme as well as completing the objective for each assignment.  He mentioned that each piece takes about 4 to 6 weeks to complete so it is obvious why he choose to work that way.

1. Vending Machine Peddling Happiness

Synthesis/ My Experience

I thought all of his pieces were really cool. Some of my favorite ones was the pill bug which was a metal upside down pill but bowl and the pot head which was a bronze pot with a face that had a succulent in it.  I really liked the idea of Neoteny because I feel like connecting to your inner child is what makes making art fun. It gives you the chance to be creative with no judgement something many people do not have the opportunity to do when they are an adult. Staying connected to you inner child reminded me of one of the reasons why I love doing research and would like to continue doing it for the rest of my life.  Since, essentially I get the opportunity to play with mud and count little critters.  Of course there is more to it than that, but that was just the part that reminded me about how I still get to stay a child at heart and possibly get paid to do that for the rest of my life like Tony.

10. Kimlee the Pothead and Conrad Jones the Watering Can
